Logic attacks on ATMs are growing in popularity, with losses running in the millions of dollars. Although ATM owners bear the brunt of the threat, bank clients may be victimized as well—especially in the case of card cloning attacks. In our security analysis work, we continually uncover vulnerabilities related to network security, improper configuration, and poor protection of peripherals. Taken together, these flaws provide criminals with the ability to steal ATM cash or obtain card information. In this report, we will share the results of ATM security analysis performed by our company in 2017–2018, discuss different types of possible logic attacks identified during such work, and provide recommendations for securing ATMs.
